Backing up your Windows registry is an important process, especially before making manual changes to it. Matt describes how to backup your Windows registry in this article.
Back-up Guide
Before making any changes to the Windows registry, you should always back it up first. There are a number of ways to do this, see below for the most popular method these days:
Step 1: Click on the Windows "Start" button and click on "Run".
Step 2: In the "Run" dialog box type in "regedit" and click "OK".
Step 3: Now click on where it says "My Computer" on the left hand side. See Screenshot:
Step 4: Bring down the "Registry" menu and click on "Export".
Step 5: You will now be prompted to save your backup file. Choose a location, name the file and click "Save". In the below example I saved the backup file in a folder called "backup" and named the file "regbackup".
Your Windows registry will now backed up within that file, so remember what and where it is!
